Abstract art paintings get rid of the monotonous realism, in other words. And certain features, form, the subject of an abstract painting is its color, instead. It is a form of art that does not try to look like something. An abstract painting does not have a recognizable subject.

However Piet Mondrian and other artists pioneered from 1914 onwards the first non-figurative paintings or pure abstract art which are also collectively a form of cubist painting. Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque initiated the movement, the leading cubists. And paintings were nearly monochromatic, color was greatly subdued. Analytic cubists on the other hand reduced natural forms to their basic geometric parts and then tried to reconcile these essentially three-dimensional parts with the two-dimensional picture plane. The artist uses strong colors and decorative shapes to dismantle an object and reassemble or "synthesize" its essential structural lines, in synthetic cubism. Abstract art painting also gained more relevance with the advent of synthetic cubism and analytical cubism.

Such an expressive method of painting as this was widely considered as essential as the painting itself. But it was generally believed that the artists' spontaneity approach to their work would draw from and release the creativity of their unconscious minds, nor was all work expressive, not all work was abstract. There was no effort to depict subject matter, most of the times. Some abstract expressionist artists were concerned with adopting a peaceful and magical approach to a purely abstract image. But which is actually highly planned, the work of its followers is characterized by a strong dependence on what appears to be accident and chance. Sometimes dripping or even throwing it onto canvas, sometimes applying paint with large brushes, non-geometrically, it is done through painting gesturally. And with force to their huge canvases to show feelings and emotions, abstract expressionism was a painting movement in which artists normally applied paint rapidly. Used the concepts of expressionism to abstract painting, which emerged in the 1940s, abstract Expressionism.

The creation of an allusion or suggestion to a real subject is its main principle. It represents real forms in a reduced or simplified way, instead. Basically an abstract art painting does not depict any figurative reality.
